Description:
Objectives: The students will use short story folklore’s from the 50 states across the country as a language arts and social studies lesson. The students will also be able to work on their pantomime and improvisation skills to bring the folklore’s to life. They will learn some interesting folktales from states by reading and acting them out. So for Social Studies they are learning something interesting about the states and the folktales that originated there. For Language Arts they are reading something that is fun for them while still being educational which will help to encourage reading and help develop the students reading skills.
Description of Procedure: The students will break up into small groups of 3 or 4 depending on the size of the class. The teacher will then pass out one short folklore from a state to each of the groups. The group will then take about 5-10 minutes to collaborate and decide upon a way to act out the story for the class; they can use their pantomime or improvisation skills. The group will then read and perform their states story in front of the class.
Evaluation Technique: After each group is done performing their states story, the students will write in their journals about their experience with the activity. They will write whether they liked or disliked the activity, what state had their favorite folklore and what their favorite state is and why.
